Also identifed are Robert Coon and John Cassidy. There are several single photos and a couple group shots that have no identifications but all were taken in the same time period. If anyone is interested, I will scan these photos and email them to you.

Military Background: My father and grandfather are both retired from the Navy. I am currently enlisted and my wife was also enlisted for six years.
Comments: I just like the PBY! I like that they have a connection with my home town of San Diego and my current duty station, NAS Whidbey Island. I'm an air traffic controller at NASWI and took a picture of the PBY that was at the airshow. The picture was taken a few days after the airshow as it was being towed from the flying club's fuel pit back to the ramp. The picture has the PBY, a C052, an FA08 and an EA-6 all together! It's on the picture page of the NUW ATC site listed or you can view it here:
www2.whidbey.net/vvatc/pby1.jpg
It's not an official governemnt website and the picture is NOT copyright so print it, save it, copy it, or whatever you want to do with it! Hope I get to see the memorial before I transfer...I still have a year left here at Whidbey.

Also, for those interested in regalia, one of the units he was in ised a patch which showed a cat throwing dice, which meant Catalina (PBY). His memory is failing him and I would like to document his service for future family reference but I have not had much luck. Dad entered service in 1933 and separated from service around 1953. Comments: Around July 1945 we picked up 8 crewmen plus a downed flier off of Japan. They were transferred to another submarine, the U.S.S. Gabilan. I have photos of these men who I don't know by name, as they pulled alongside our sub. The PBY they were on picked up a downed pilot but sustained extensive fuselage damage and had to abandon their plane. A flying boxcar dropped a boat which broke in half and another plane was dispatched to the area and dropped another boat which remained intact enabling them to get to the area, which incidentially was a mine field, and boarded our sub without any further problems. Any help in locating any of these former crew of this PBY will be greatly appreciated.

Comments: I own PBY 6-A N9825Z, I am prsently restoring the airplane, it is the last one built by Consolidated, and only has 2800 flying hours on it. It is being put back 100 % military, blisters, bow turret, nose glass, bunks, stove, navigators desk, engineers seat, the only changes I am keeping is the ability for the pilot to start the engines and select the fuel tanks. The engines on this airplane are the P & W 1830-92. They have 60 hours on one and 200 hours on the other. They seem to run very well.

This was a great plane - versatile, rugged, homely, reliable, and adored by downed pilots. You must be aware of the PBY Catalina Foundation. They sell T-shirts to raise funds - you should, too. I'd get 3 or 4. If I had a spare $450,000, I'd buy the one that is for sale.

Web Site: Good story about a PBY named "Katie"
From: San Jose, CA U.S.A.
Age group: 80-89
Military Background: I served a little over 8 years in the U.S. Navy with VQ0, VRC-50, VP-30, and VP00.
Comments: I used to look down from the air on an abandoned PBY next to a pond on a farm outside Elizabeth City. I doubt its still there.

Web Site: Dedicated to saving the USS RANGER CV-61
From: Everett, WA U.S.A.
Age group: 60-69
Military Background: 19560962 USN. Best duty station on shore was NAS Whidbey Island. Served at the base Photo Lab on Seaplane Base. Took many flights in the PBY and others that were stationed there 1959. Was attached to Heavy (VAH) Six and when went aboard the Ranger discovered where I liked to be! Now am web master and I invite you to visit our web site, where we are trying to save the ship as a museum/Navy Memorial.
Comments: Remembered best was the slugishness of smooth water and the quickness of a little white water! But in the air it was smooth enought to take what ever picture I was taking!

Comments: The PBY5A undoubtedly was the right aircraft for the Aleutian flying area. Tough, dependable and always got us back. It was cold and the navigator's window above the table always leaked!!

The Navy R4D, R5D, R6D, SNB, JRB. C117, C119, and SNJ. I have a civilian Comercial pilot License, Single engine land and sea with an Instrument rating and have flown many civilian aircraft. The PBY is the best. I am presently part of the PBY Memorial Foundation. We plan to bring a PBY Back the NAS Whidbey Island Seaplane base as a memorial to the Men who flew in this aircraft during WW II.

Military Background: Navy brat. Deafness in one ear kept me out against my wishes. I tried several times to no avail. Medical advances finally fixed the problem at age 42 after umpteen surgeries and decades of hoping. A little late for starting a military background.
Comments: I have become an active member of the PBY Memorial Foundation (active in the sense that I maintain this web site). I am eagerly looking forward to getting our own hangar and PBY for our museum.
